Frequently Asked Questions
Q: On what items can I use this product?
A: You can use it on rugs, residential or commercial carpet, and automobile carpet and matting. Always check for colorfastness first by testing in an inconspicuous area.
Q: How often should I reapply?
A: With wear from dirt and traffic, the carpet's protection wears away with time. The more traffic and/or dirt, the faster it wears. In addition, each time your carpet is cleaned with deep hot water extraction, the protection is diminished considerably. We recommend professional periodic cleaning at least once a year with a hot water extraction method and reapplying Scotchgard™ Protector after each cleaning.
Q: If my carpet already has a mill-applied protection, do I ever need to apply this product, Scotchgard™ Carpet & Rug Protector?
A: Yes, Schotchgard should be reapplied after each cleaning of your carpet. Also, in high traffic areas, or where spills are most likely to occur, applying this product boosts the protection of the mill treatment.
Q: How long does it take to dry?
A: Under average room temperature conditions (70°F, 50% Humidity), most fibers should dry within an hour. Always be sure to check before resuming normal traffic in the treated areas. Longer dry times could occur under the following conditions: colder temperatures, more humid conditions, or heavy applications. Providing for proper ventilation and Airmovers will also provide a quicker dry time in most conditions.
Q: Is this product safe to use on wool rugs?
A: The product is safe for use on wool rugs that can be cleaned with water. (Some may have a "cleanability code" - where "W" or "WS" would indicate it is safe to be cleaned with water.) If it says, "Dry Clean Only", then we would not recommend application of a water based protector. Always check for colorfastness first by testing in an inconspicuous area.
Q: Will my carpet stiffen from using Scotchgard™ Carpet & Rug Protector?
A: No. Using Scotchgard™ Carpet & Rug Protector does not change the look or feel of carpet. Occasionally, slight over-application of product or accelerated drying (with fans or heat) may cause treated fibers to stiffen. Simply, vacuum the affected areas and the carpet will feel normal again.
Q: Can I use this product for oriental rugs?
A: Only on rugs that are colorfast. We do not recommend this product for use on oriental rugs that are unstable. We have found the variability between manufacturers and the occasional use of food dyes can produce unusual and unpredictable results. This types are rugs would be dry cleaned and a solvent based protector would be applied after cleaning.
